Sometimes, being comfortable with your weight isn't such a good thing...

Damon Taylor had always had a problem with his weight. "I was a chubby kid, a fat teenager, and an overweight adult," he admits. Damon had tried before to lose weight, and often was successful, but never enough to make a difference.
"Luckily, I had my sense of humor going for me, so I was never really given a hard time about my weight from my peers. Sure, people would sometimes joke about my 'husky' build, but I laughed it off, or made it into a joke. In a way, that was my crutch. While it worked for many years to help me ignore the problem, deep down inside, it always bothered me."
Damon's doctor had interfered a few times over the years, sending Damon first to a nutritionist, and then to a diet center. "I just didn't feel comfortable with people telling me that I should be so upset about my weight. I would go through the routine for about a month, and then quit, because really, I was happy the way I was."
In 2004, Damon got married. "My wife has never pressured me to lose weight, although she did try to pass ground turkey off for ground beef once. I knew right away," he jokes.
After about a year of marriage, Damon and his wife found out that they were expecting a baby. "I was ecstatic," he recalls. Just before the baby was born, Damon was at one of his highest weights ever. Damon was 235 pounds, and his doctor had been on him about his cholesterol and blood pressure. "The day that my wife went into labor, I was so excited and nervous at the same time. While in the hospital room with her, I started to get the worst headache, and was extremely dizzy. The nurses took my blood pressure, and rushed me away. They said my blood pressure was so high, that I was in danger of a heart attack. At 33 years old? They hooked me up to an EKG, and gave me IVs to help slow my heart. I couldn't believe it, I was missing the birth of my boy. It was the hardest thing I ever went through. I wasn't one of those fathers in the movies that fainted because they were so nervous, this was the real deal. After I was stable, I got to see my brand new son, and I realized that I needed to change drastically to make sure I was always there. It was no longer just about me and my comfort zone. Everything had changed."
Damon began a healthier approach to eating immediately, by adhering to the low sodium diet that his doctor put him on. "I felt like an old person being on a low sodium diet at 33, but I knew that I needed to do it. Cutting out the sodium was really hard at first, and made me have cravings like mad," he recalls. "So, I did some research and began supplementing with Lipocerin because it contains Hoodia. Not only did it help cut out the cravings, but it really helped get my weight loss going. I have lost a total of 45 lbs, and did it in about 3 1/2 months time. My cholesterol and blood pressure have dropped drastically."
In addition to his new sense of nutrition, Damon also enjoys a more active lifestyle. "Now, that wasn’t part of my plan at first," he laughs. "That just seemed to come naturally because of the little guy. He was happiest and fuss-free during walks in the stroller, so to keep peace and quiet in the house, we went for walks nightly. And now that he’s almost two, I don't stop. Who needs to join a gym when you have a toddler? Best exercise in the world."
Damon's Tips For Healthy Weight Loss:
- Lose the gut: "My doctor explained that guys that have more upper body fat are at a higher risk for heart attack because the fat is closer to your heart. Start doing exercises that target your abs- you don't have to aim for a six pack, but getting rid of the flab is a start. Also, cut down on the beers and alcohol- they tend to go straight to the belly."
- Listen to your doctor: "Chances are they’re not making the stuff up or like to hear themselves talk. While it's embarrassing to hear that you need to shed some pounds, the consequences can be much more devastating. They're not on commission or anything, so realize they are speaking the truth."
- Your approach: "My low sodium diet promoted foods like fruits, vegetables, lean meats, and low fat dairy such as yogurt. Turns out these were healthy choices for weight loss and lowering cholesterol as well. In the beginning, I thought about it purely from the sodium aspect because that was the paramount issue at hand. When I realized that the rest was falling into place, it was like a bonus. Sometimes, if you try to handle too much, it ends up getting you discouraged and overwhelmed; take it one step at a time."
- Drink water: "I was a huge soda drinker. I make myself drink water during the day instead, and reserve my soda consumption for dinner only. It really helped me lose weight."
- Limit your take out: "Eating healthy while eating out is difficult, but certainly not impossible. If need be, look online to see which menu items are better choices."
- No matter what: "DON'T eat late at night. I will sometimes have a snack a little while after dinner, but not within two hours before I sleep. I had been snacking heavily before bed, and when I cut this out, the pounds started coming off quicker."
